“Top Gun”

As we move into the multimedia age, many of us choose to enjoy watching movies over reading “boring” books. As a child I sometimes had an impulsive urge to read and then I would lose complete interest. Reading is just so time consuming, movies on the other hand are so much easier to do! The thing about watching a movie is you get to merge with a technological master piece. A piece of art that shows how far we have come since sticks and stones.

I grew up in India during the cold war era. India was (and still is) a socialistic country. India had close ties with the soviet union and nationalism was still big. While watching Top Gun the first time something just clicked inside of me. All through my childhood I wanted to be a fighter pilot.

With the breath taking cinematography and flight sequences, Top Gun looks as good today as it did when it came out in 1986! There is just something special about traveling 3 times the speed of sound. With my dad being an Aeronautical Engineer, my family was able to see a lot of fighter planes. Every opportunity I had I would run to get my picture taken in a cockpit…. It feels like it was just yesterday when I got to touch a piece of French machinery, called the Mirage 2000. It sure was a mirage… gave me goose bumps just to be in ‘Maverick’s’ shoes.

There’s just something special about a plane being catapulted off an aircraft carrier’s deck. Top Gun was made into a movie to attract young American guns into the military. It might have helped recruit thousands in Nations worldwide. Such is the power of this Hollywood flick!

My brother always used to make fun of me for being short but when he tried out for the military they told him he would be too tall! In my final year of college, I weighed my option of joining the navy as a pilot or doing my masters. My masters felt far more career building. A few dreams I guess are just not meant to be.

Top Gun is a movie truly well made; from flight sequences, to story line and the “OST” is one of the best ever. The young rash top cat showing the establishment how its done. A bit of romance thrown in and the chances you need to take. Some of which horribly go wrong.

I also love Top Gun. I would not say it is one of my Top movies but it is a classic. Ice Man and Maverick were my favorite. My mom loved Goose. I thought about joining the military but not due to the movie… I was only 3 years old when it came out. It wasn’t until recently that I knew I grew up during the Cold War (which I had no idea what it was) I owe thanks to the movie Charlie Wilson’s War. Doh!

LOL 6mile! I DO know that quote LOL. I LOVE Top Gun. I watch it everytime it’s on TV. My favorite song is from it, “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin. I hate the Jessica Simpson version of it..she totally just ruined the song LOL.

I wanted to join the military at one point to pay for college, but they don’t take people with asthma or flat feet LOL. It didn’t matter that I did very excellent on my ASVAB test..the military test.

WmWB, you really didn’t know about the Cold War? It was very much emphasized in the school I went to. I remember when they tore down the Berlin Wall too. Hmm..that’s interesting..maybe because Texas isn’t all THAT far from Cuba, it was emphasized…I’m not sure.

One of my favorite quotes from Top Gun is:
“You’re everyone’s problem. That’s because every time you go up in the air, you’re unsafe. I don’t like you because you’re dangerous.”
    “That’s right! Ice… man. I am dangerous.”

I am from FL and I think that is pretty close to Cuba! My mom did not even put my in Kindergarten until I was about to turn 7 so that may be it??

I went to Florida on my first spring break, The trip was pretty much traveling. I dare say the beaches at GOA are more beautiful :P.

The drive to Key West was beautiful, and it has the feel of a rustic Portuguese town :)

  6. whiteymcwheatbread Says:

I am not familiar with GOA what does it stand for?

  7. 6mile Says:

GOA is a state in India, its a former portugese colony filled with golden sand beaches.

This too shall pass! Everyone goes through the ups and downs depending on relationships, social life, work, etc (as I know you know) but we can make it sour or we can turn it into lemonade depending on how we treat it!
